About The Uniform Project

The Uniform Project is a not for profit, Christian faith based charitable organisation; that believes that every child deserves a good childhood, a level playing field and great opportunities to achieve their full potential. Uniform Project’s initial primary focus is to address the plight of children from nomadic tribal pastoralist communities of Kenya.

In Turkana and Pokot regions for example, due to frequent droughts, famine and tribal wars many children have been left without parents, siblings or a place to call home, thus taking away the ability to gain an education. We believe kids need love, nurturing and empowerment through education for a hopeful future.

About Turkana People

Livestock are at the heart of the Turkana culture. It’s been that way since ancient times. Pastoralists tend their animals in a region that was already dry and hot even before the severe drought took hold, at one point a family may have goats and cattle and at another point, they have nothing, wiped away by severe and prolonged drought or lost in deadly cattle rustling.

About Education in Turkana

The nomadic lifestyle of the Turkana community, high illiteracy levels among adults, chronic poverty, recurrent droughts and a lack of awareness of the value of education among parents all serve to disrupt children’s education and compound the vulnerabilities of households.

Turkana County, over 82 per cent of people are illiterate, the highest in the country of Kenya.

Its estimate that more than 62% of girls and 50% of boys in Turkana community aged between 6 and 13 years are not in school. This is mainly due to parents or carers being extremely poor and unable to pay for basic needs of the child. Worse still if the child is orphaned and has no one to care for them or a place to call home.

Although primary school in Kenya is free, school supplies, such as writing materials like pens and pencils, exercise books, textbooks, and uniforms are required to be purchased by parents. However, given the level of poverty, many parents cannot afford these costs, causing kids to not go to school or drop out of school.
